NPILF Roundtable Report to Government
Shaping the Future of Work-Integrated Learning in Australia
In October 2025, WIL Australia convened a national roundtable that brought together participants from universities, industry, community organisations and government to reflect on the achievements of the National Priorities and Industry Linkage Fund (NPILF) and chart a course for ongoing sustainable, equitable Work-Integrated Learning across Australian higher education.
This report was prepared by WIL Australia, with input from sector interest-holders during the October 2025 roundtable and subsequent peer-review with members of our national organisation. It captures the collective voice of the sector and presents ten recommendations across three strategic domains: Structure, Practice and Funding.
Recommendations:
Structure
- Embed quality WIL as core institutional infrastructure
- Strengthen governance and coordination across the WIL ecosystem
- Develop scalable models for virtual and flexible WIL
Practice
- Build long-term, reciprocal partnerships with industry and community
- Advance equity and inclusion across all WIL models
- Embed cultural safety and strengthen First Nations engagement
- Strengthen curriculum integration and staff capability
Funding
- Establish sustained national funding for WIL
- Introduce targeted financial supports for employers and community partners
- Reduce financial barriers for students and promote equitable access.
