During my final year of the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, I completed a transformative six-week community placement in the beautiful, remote area of Bourke, NSW. My placement focused on health promotion, collaborating with school and community garden stakeholders to enhance access to fresh produce and encourage healthier lifestyles. Growing up in metropolitan Sydney, this experience enabled me to develop invaluable insights into the unique strengths and challenges faced by remote communities and highlighted the significant impact of targeted health promotion efforts. Working in Bourke was an enriching experience which challenged my assumptions of rural health and fostered both personal and professional growth. Coming into placement, I was keen to understand the role of nutrition in supporting under-resourced remote communities and I gained valuable insights into the unique barriers to healthy food access and health challenges faced by this remote area. Engaging with community members also emphasised the importance of a strength-based approach in health promotion, revealing the strong sense of community, resilience and creativity within Bourke as well as the diverse learning experiences offered for healthcare workers. Additionally, I learned that taking the time to be in space and build relationships with community members is crucial for the success of community initiatives. By immersing myself in local events and volunteering at the community garden, I was able to foster trust, build rapport and gain deeper insights into the community's needs which enabled more effective responses to community voice. Alongside the ability to strengthen my communication skills, I was also able to enhance my cultural competence through opportunities to engage with and learn from First Nations elders and community members. These experiences enabled me to deepen my understanding about their culture, beliefs and health determinants, enhancing my ability to deliver culturally safe and holistic care. The scholarship I received from ACEN has been instrumental in supporting my rural experience by alleviating financial pressures, enabling me to fully engage with my placement and the valuable learning opportunities it offered. I am grateful for the opportunity, which allowed me to connect with the community, supervisors and fellow students. The knowledge, skills and friendships I have gained along the way have broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for rural and remote healthcare. Overall, my placement in Bourke highlighted the potential for meaningful impact and strengthened my desire to work in rural health. This adventure has inspired me to pursue a career that focused on health equity and community engagement, increasing my confidence in my ability to contribute positively to rural health outcomes.
