My Work-Integrated Learning experience at Riverland General Hospital in a rural area became my final placement for the Master of Social Work program. The 16-week placement at Riverland General Hospital provided me with my most valuable learning experience throughout my entire degree. The rural environment taught me how to apply theoretical knowledge from university through direct experience.
I finished my placement at the Rehabilitation and Transitional Care Program while working under a supportive social work team and multidisciplinary team. The need for holistic care delivery requires teams to work together so I learned about the value of teamwork during my placement. The rural consumers faced multiple challenges because of their age and restricted access to specialist services and long distances to Adelaide and limited available resources. The multiple layers of disadvantage prove that social workers need to act as advocates for their clients. The program's restricted funding requires staff to develop creative solutions with other agencies to achieve the best possible results for their clients.
The start of my placement experience involved watching social workers at work and participating in family conferences and receiving input from the diverse team members. I managed my own client cases without supervision during my last placement period but I kept my supervisor available for professional guidance. The combination of daily reflective journaling with formal supervision gave me the necessary support to advance my professional development. I frequently think about my progress since starting in Australia as an international student who struggled with English while now I feel like a valued member of the social work team.
The scholarship allowed me to concentrate on my studies because it covered my living costs. All students need to experience rural placements because the educational benefits surpass expectations and the local community provides outstanding support. The scholarship helped me manage my expenses so I could explore Riverland's natural scenery and enjoy its local food and serene environment. I practiced self-care through social activities with friends during my free time on weekends.
The experience has been amazing because it strengthened my commitment to become a hospital social worker.
