Embarking on my Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement in Kingaroy was a transformative experience that opened a whole new world for me as a nursing student. Having previously completed placements exclusively in metropolitan areas, the decision to immerse myself in a rural setting was both exciting and daunting. Looking back, I realise just how much this experience has positively impacted both my personal and professional growth. Throughout my placement, I honed essential clinical skills such as patient assessment, whilst also developing my soft skills like communication and teamwork. The nurses were incredibly welcoming and eager to share their knowledge, creating a supportive learning environment that boosted my confidence and encouraged me to embrace new challenges. As the perioperative team was small, I would always see the same nurses each shift. This consistency allowed me to build strong relationships with each member of the team—whether it was the admissions nurse, anaesthetic nurse, scrub/scout nurse, or recovery nurse. Each of my nurses brought their own unique skills and perspectives, and they were always willing to take the time to explain procedures, answer my questions, and provide constructive feedback. Furthermore, being in a rural setting allowed me to engage with diverse patient populations and enhance my understanding of community health needs and culturally sensitive care. Receiving the ACEN WIL Scholarship for this placement positively influenced my experience as it alleviated the financial burden of living away from home, allowing me to focus entirely on my learning and community engagement. My time at Kingaroy has also helped me solidify my career aspiration of becoming a perioperative nurse. During my placement, I had the opportunity to observe and assist with various surgical procedures and gain valuable insight into the role of perioperative nurses. I enjoyed seeing the teamwork, attention to detail, and critical thinking required in this specialised setting to ensure positive patient outcomes. Overall, I had an amazing experience and am still surprised by how quickly time went by. From my experience, I would highly recommend any curious nursing students to choose a rural placement!
