Veterinary Placement in Rural Australia

Undertaking a rural pre-clinical veterinary placement has been an enriching experience, offering me invaluable insights into various animal industries and fostering my personal and professional growth. This adventure has inspired me to continue my journey into veterinary medicine, and given me a desire to work in rural mixed practice. Throughout my placements, 3 weeks in total across a crocodile farm, a sled dog business and a diary farm, I have witnessed firsthand the diversity of animal industries in rural areas, ranging in sizes, outputs, perspectives, and requirements of veterinary care. Each place I went to during my pre-clinical placements has presented different rural animal husbandry opportunities and challenges, and the exposure I gained during these placements has broadened my understanding of veterinarian roles and opportunities. This placement has significantly supported my career aspirations in veterinary medicine. It has allowed me to gain personal growth and skill development that will be applicable across my entire career, as well as allowing me to gain a better understanding of communication in farming and across animal industries. Additionally, I've developed essential soft skills such as adaptability, problem solving, and effective communication to organise and coordinate placements. The scholarship I received from ACEN played a huge role in enhancing my rural experience. It alleviated financial constraints, enabling me to focus on the placement without financial concerns, and allowed me to expand the horizons of where I could travel for my placements to gain a wider experience. This allowed me to fully immerse myself in the rural community and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges regional communities and veterinarians face, and so I would like to thank ACEN immensely for the incredible opportunity.
