During my WIL placement on a beef cattle farm, I experienced significant personal growth and skill development that will strongly support my future career as a veterinarian. I was immersed in the day-to-day operations of a rural livestock business and gained hands-on experience with herd health monitoring, vaccinations and large animal handling. This practical exposure not only enhanced my technical abilities but also strengthened my confidence in working with large animals and having to make timely, evidence-based decisions in a farm setting.
One of the most valuable aspects of the placement was the opportunity to improve my communication skills, particularly when discussing veterinary related topics with the farm owners and workers. I learned to ask more questions, and it was amazing to see how the material learnt in lectures could also be applied in relation to feed, nutrition, land management and even grass species. Additionally, the fast-paced and unpredictable nature of rural veterinary work strengthened my problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, preparing me for real-world challenges.
This placement has affirmed my aspiration to work in a rural veterinary practice post-graduation. The experience demonstrated the vital role veterinarians play in supporting the agricultural industry and rural communities, and it highlighted the meaningful relationships formed with clients over time. I now feel a stronger sense of purpose and commitment to contributing to animal health, especially in a rural setting.
The scholarship I received made this placement financially possible. It helped cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experience without financial stress. Hence, it made my placement feel like a more realistic and sustainable career pathway. I’m incredibly grateful to WIL Australia for the support, which has both solidified my interest in returning to and serving rural communities in the future.
